The raw send cost is the small part. The bigger, harder-to-price cost of mailing invalids is the damage to your sending reputation and deliverability: high bounce rates and spam-trap hits push mailbox providers to throttle or spam-folder your mail — which quietly suppresses delivery to the valid people on your list too. We can't put an honest number on that for you, so we don't try — but it's usually the reason cleaning a list pays for itself many times over.

At this volume, a pay-as-you-go top-up or an entry subscription usually works out cheapest — verify the whole list, then only new sign-ups going forward.

“Is verifying my list actually worth it?” is a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends on your numbers. This calculator doesn’t pretend to know your list — it takes the figures you enter (how big it is, roughly how many addresses are dead, what you pay to send, what you’d pay to verify) and does the arithmetic in front of you, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and every result is clearly an estimate built from your own inputs. Think of it as a back-of-the-envelope you can trust because you can see every step.

What the calculator actually computes

There’s no magic here — just four numbers and some multiplication you could do yourself:

  • Estimated invalid addresses = list size × your invalid/stale rate. If you have real bounce data from a recent send, use it; the 15% default is only a placeholder, and long-unverified lists often run higher.
  • Wasted ESP spend per send = invalid addresses ÷ 1,000 × your cost per thousand. This is the money you literally pay to deliver mail to addresses that can’t receive it.
  • Cost to verify the list = list size × your per-address verification cost. A one-time cost for the whole list.
  • Net position — whether a single send’s wasted spend already covers the cost of verifying. For most lists it does, and that’s before counting the part you can’t easily price.

Why the send cost is the small part

If you only look at the ESP line, verification can look marginal — sending is cheap per message. But the raw send cost isn’t where invalids hurt most. Every message to a dead address is a bounce, and a cluster of them (plus the occasional spam trap sitting in an old list) tells mailbox providers that you don’t know who you’re mailing. Their response is to throttle you, route more of your mail to spam, or both — and that penalty lands on the valid subscribers too. The cost of a damaged sender reputation is real and often far larger than the wasted sends, but it’s genuinely hard to put a single honest dollar figure on, so this tool deliberately doesn’t invent one. It stays qualitative on purpose.

Turning the estimate into a decision

Once you’ve got numbers you believe, the move is usually the same: verify the list once to clear out the dead weight, then keep it clean going forward rather than letting decay build back up. The two habits that matter most are verifying new addresses at the point of capture (a real-time check on your sign-up form) and re-checking the list before any large or important send. A note on the defaults

The prefilled invalid rate and per-address cost are representative starting points, not claims about your situation or promises about pricing. Swap them for your own: pull your bounce rate from your ESP’s last campaign report, and take the verification cost straight from our pricing page for the volume you’re at. The whole point of a client-side tool is that you can see and change every assumption — so the output is only ever as good, and as honest, as the numbers you feed it.

Frequently asked questions

Where do these numbers come from — are they real?
They’re calculated entirely from what you type. The tool runs in your browser, makes no network calls, and doesn’t measure your list — every figure is an estimate from your inputs, so it’s only as accurate as they are.
What invalid rate should I use?
Your own bounce data, ideally — the hard-bounce rate from a recent campaign. With no data, treat the 15% default as a placeholder; long-unverified lists often run higher.
Why doesn’t it put a number on reputation damage?
Because we can’t do it honestly. Deliverability harm varies too much by sender and provider to reduce to one number — inventing a percentage would be dishonest, so we flag it qualitatively instead.
How do I get an accurate verification cost?
Take it from the pricing page for your volume. The prefilled figure is just a representative starting point — your real per-address cost depends on the plan or credit pack you pick.
