About Spamhaus DBL

The DBL lists domains rather than IPs — a domain that sends spam, or whose URLs appear inside spam messages. It’s widely used to block mail mentioning bad domains, so a listing hurts even when your IPs are clean.

Why an domain gets listed

  • The domain (or a subdomain) was used to send spam.
  • The domain’s URLs appeared in spam/phishing message bodies.
  • The domain is newly registered and abused (see also ZRD).

How to delist from Spamhaus DBL

  1. 1Look the domain up at check.spamhaus.org to see why it’s listed.
  2. 2Remove the abuse — take down spammy pages/redirects, secure any compromised CMS, and stop any spam runs referencing the domain.
  3. 3Request removal via the DBL record on the lookup page once the domain is clean.

Before you request removal: fix the root cause first — delisting while the problem persists almost always leads to a fast re-listing. Confirm the IP has valid reverse DNS, and that your SPF, DKIM and DMARC are in order.
